Miri is the second largest city located in Sarawak covering a total area of 4707 sq kms and lying at an elevation of 72 feet above sea level. Miri is known for major industries like timber, oil palm and off late has become a major tourist attraction in Malaysia. It is world famous for its National Parks and renowned for its exotic coral reefs. Miri coordinates with 4.24’ degree North Latitude and 113.59’ degree East Longitude.

 

Miri History:

It is said that human settlement dates back to 35000 B.C. from adjoining Niah caves from where initial settlers originated to Miri. The first petroleum refinery well was dug in the year 1910 and has become one of the major tourist attractions in Miri. Miri was attacked by the Japanese forces in the year 1941 which destroyed many oil well and oil fields resulting in huge loss. But in the late 60’s Miri experienced a breakthrough where many oil fields were discovered and from then onwards it developed as one of the business, commercial and emerging cities of Malaysia.
