Bhojpur is a historical town situated in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh state known for famous historical monuments, temples, Archeological sites and palaces. Bhojpur is located on the banks of river Betwa and is about 28 kms from Bhopal. Bhojpur coordinates with 23.6’54” degree North Latitude and 77.35’43” degree East Longitude.

Bhojpur History:

Bhojpur is named after the king Bhoja who was ruling this place between 1000 A.D to 1055 A.D. The king Bhoja constructed many dams in this place to prevent outflow of rivers waters and rivulets.

Bhojeshwar Temple:

This is one of the prominent temples located in Bhojpur dedicated to lord Shiva. The temple has one of the biggest lingas in India measuring 18 feet in height and is built out of a single rock. The temple is preserved and maintained by Archeological Survey of India. It is an important tourist spot in Bhojpur.

Cave of Parvati:

Adjacent to Bhojeshwar temple lies the cave of Parvati facing river Betwa, which consists of numerous sculptures and architectural carvings belonging to 11th century. Many visitors and tourists come to this place to have a view of the wonderful artwork and craftsmanship.

Bhoja’s Palace:

This is one of the ancient palace located in Bhojpur built by king Bhoja during his times of rule. This majestically designed Palace used to be an imposing structure in the earlier times, but due to passage of time, currently only the remains of the Palace is found in Bhojpur.

Jain Temples:

Bhojpur is also well known for Jain temples which have statues of lord Shantinath, lord Parsvnath and lord Suparasnath. One can notice the relics and inscriptions of king Bhoja carved at the bottom of the statues.

Amarkantak:

Amarkantak is a holy pilgrimage center situated at the foothills of Vindhya and Satpura Ranges and is about 1067 meters above sea level. Amarkantak is famous for rivers and temples out of which the temple dedicated to Narmada Maiya is the most prominent one in this part of the town.

Bhopal:

Bhopal the capital city of Madhya Pradesh is located at 28 kms from Bhojpur well known for temples, lakes, boating, dams, Wildlife sanctuaries and malls.

Bandhavgarh:

Kahna National Park:

Kahna wildlife sanctuary is famous for Tiger reserve covering an area of 1945 sq kms. The main attractions of the park include tiger, leopard, bison, gaur, sambhar, chital, black deer, nilgai and elephants.

Khajuraho:

Khajuraho is famous for Hindu and Jain temples which has erotic rock carvings located at the backdrop of Vindhya & Satpura Ranges. The temples depict Indo-Aryan style of architecture and are built between 950 A.D. to 1050 A.D. They are known as World Heritage Site maintained by UNESCO.

When to visit Bhojpur?

Bhojpur can be visited all round the year but if one has to visit some the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries located near Bhojpur, then the best time to visit Bhojpur would be during months of November to February as the wildlife sanctuary is closed for public during the monsoons.
