Trincomalee is one of the major cities of Sri Lanka and the administrative headquarters of Trincomalee District in Eastern Province is situated about 263 km northeast of Colombo City and about 243 kms southeast of Jaffna City. Trincomalee is one of the Tamils majority cities in the country.

 

Etymology of Trincomalee:

The name Trincomalee derives from three Tamil language words “Thiru-kona-malai” means “Lord of the Sacred Hill”.

Trincomalee covers an area of 7.5 sq. km is placed between 8°34′0″ N latitude 81°14′0″ E longitude and experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. From March to June is the dry season in Trincomalee.

The Dutch Fort was built by Portuguese Empires during Portuguese colonial period in Sri Lanka. Later it was conquered by Dutch in the year 1639 and after 33 years, French Empires captured it from Dutch and rebuild.
