Nimes is a historical city and popular tourist destination in the country and the capital of the Gard department in Languedoc-Roussillon region in southern part of France. The economy of the town depends on textiles industries and tourism and Paris, capital of France is situated at the distance of 715 kilometers from Nimes.

Nimes is surrounded by Montpellier, Arles, Marseolle, Avignon, Beaucaire, Ales, Orange and Uzes and spans an area of 161.85 square kilometers (62.49 square miles) and situated at an average elevation of 39 meters (128 feet) above the sea level. Coordinates of Nimes are 43.8378° N, 4.3608° E.

 

History of Nimes:

Nimes was the sight of Neolithic tribes around 4000 to 3500 BC and population of the region increased during the Bronze Age. Roman colonies were established in the region during 28 BC and during the Augustus rule in the region; he made the Nimes as the capital of Narbonne province and enjoyed the prosperous until the 3rd century. After the fall of Roman’s Goths ruled the region and in 725, Umayyads, the Muslim ruler captured the region and in 737, Charles Martel invaded the region and destroyed most of the Roman architecture. Nimes was prospered from 17th century and population grew gradually.
