Alghero is a town situated in the province of Sassari in Sardinia region of Italy between 40°33′ N latitude and 08°19′ E longitude. Alghero is well known for its internationally renowned white sand beaches and it also gained importance from its well preserved historical sites.

 

Geography of Alghero:

Lying at an elevation of 7 meters, Alghero is spread over an area of 224.43 sq. km, situated around 35 km southwest of the provincial capital, Sassari and 440 km southwest of the national capital, Rome.

 

History of Alghero:

Alghero derives its name from the Medieval Latin word, Aleguerium and was first settled in the pre-historic times. The famous Ozieri culture and Nuraghe culture were existed in the region in the 4th millennium BC and 1500 BC respectively. It is believed that, the Genoese Doria family was the founder of Alghero, founded in 1102.

Alghero is served by Alghero-Fertilia Airport, located around 8 km away from the heart of Alghero town. This airport has connection with Milan, Bucharest, Rome, London, Dublin and many other well known European cities.
