Kindu is a city and the capital of Maniema province in the African country the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is located on the Congo River, covering an area of 150 sq. km. Kindu is geographically positioned between 2°57′ S latitude and 25°57′ E longitude, at an elevation of about 500 metres. Kindu is home to the University of Kindu and has all the basic and modern amenities including shops and restaurants. Kindu is situated around 400 km west of the city of Bukavu and 2000 km east of the national capital, Kinshasa.

 

History of Kindu:

Historically Kindu emerged as one of the important mining areas of DRC in the 19th century, which was highly utilized by the Arab-Swahili slave traders. The city still houses many historical structures dating from that period.

 

How to get Kindu?

The Kindu Airport is situated within the city premise, served by Compagnie Africaine d’Aviation with scheduled flights from Bukavu and Kinshasa.

Kindu is reachable by train from Lubumbashi and other southeastern Congolese cities. Buses are only frequent between Kindu and its surrounding cities, not from all around the country. Due to this, visitors are suggested to hire a car when travelling between long distances.
