Bacolod is derived from local word meaning a hill, mound or a hillock as the place is located at an elevation level. Since the early settlements were found in a hilly area, the place came to be called as Bacolod in course of time. Formerly Bacolod was under Spanish colonial rule between the 17^th and 18^th centuries. Gradually it became a part of Negros Revolution in the late 18^th century followed by American Colonial Rule in the early 19^th century.
