<p>During the Pre-colonial period, dating to the 13th century, the locals residing in Jharkhand were unable to tolerate the harsh rules implemented by tribal chiefs. So they approached Raja Jai Singh Deo, who was the then ruler of Orissa to be their king. Raja Jai Singh Deo, in those days was well known, in providing a fair and just system throughout his kingdom. During his reign over Jharkhand, only the good tribal chiefs were spared and were called as Munda Rajas.</p>
<p>During the reign of the Mughals, Giridih was called as Kukara. With the fall of the Mughal power in 1765, came the rise of the British East India Company who ruled the Jharkhand state.
