Bhamo is located in the northern part of Myanmar and in Kachin State. The district is very close to the border between the Myanmar country and neighboring country China. Bhamo is at a distance of 713 km from the countries capital city Naypyidaw. Trade link between Myanmar and China exists and is officially recognized through this district only. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 16⁰46’27” N and 94⁰43’54” E.

During summer season the average temperature is 34⁰C and in winter temperature drops to 7⁰C with humid subtropical climate.

History of Bhamo:

Since ancient times there existed a trade route between the Chinese rulers and Myanmar. Trade between these two countries continued till the 19^th century and coins made from copper metal kept flowing into the Myanmar country through trade. Later on the Dutch traders began to trade with the locals of Myanmar. The Dutch recognized the importance of the copper coins and began to setup various regulations within the region which profited them. During which the trade flourished between the countries, Myanmar, China and India. When the place was under the rule of the Shan Kingdom who hailed from Manmaw, Bhamo was then known as Sampanago. There are proofs of these facts such as old ruins found in the region dating back to the 5^th century.

This airport was operational from the year 1942 by the Japanese and was used as an Air Force base by them until the end of the Second World War. Later reconstruction work began and the airport was used for catering domestic flights.
