Abbey Falls in Karnataka, India

Abbey Falls is very beautiful water fall located in Kodagu district of Karnataka state in India. Kodagu is also known by its anglicized name Coorg. This waterfall is surrounded by coffee plantations from one side and spice estates from other side.

The woody and sylvan surrounding makes this Abbey Falls look more beautiful. You can see trees entwined with pepper vines creating dream landscape. This water fall looks very beautiful in monsoon season, when the water is on its proper glory. The roar of fierce water can be heard from very far. The water falls with great speed and the mist generated out of it gives smoky look to it.

This water fall gives Western Ghats of Karnataka heavenly looks. It is one of the most visited tourist places in Karnataka. The very town place of this water fall is so beautiful. The water flows from Abbey Falls and assimilates in Kaveri River. There are small streams which frame this water fall.

Though the monsoon season is considered the best time to visit and enjoy any water fall view, but this water fall can be enjoyed any time of the year. The slippery rocks and mountains make this fall more beautiful and natural. It is a best place for the lover of nature.

It falls from a height of 70 feet on the rocks. The water pool on the footsteps of this water fall is a best place for playful activities. But the slippery rocks can be dangerous as there are no life guards available there. Earlier the name of this water fall was Jessey Water Falls. It was named in memory of the daughter of Madikeri’s first chaplain named Jessey. Afterwards it got named Abbey; in Kannada language abbey means falls.

How to reach there:

This water fall is 270 km away from Bangalore and 90 km from nearest airport in Mangalore. To reach this water fall you have to drive all the way to Mysore and from there you take the road to Madikeri. Madikeri is capital of Kodagu (Coorg). This fall is 10 km from Madikeri. You can also take local transportation service to reach there. The road is narrow one, so needs safe drive.

There are many hotels in Madikeri where you can halt for a day or two. But it’s better to carry food and water if you are planning to stay longer. It is not only the water fall which makes this place so special but when you walk the way through coffee fields, you get beauty and splendor of it.
