History of Behrampur

In the year 1757, the British Raj built a fort in Behrampur after the battle of Plassey which took place.

Karnasubarna a place very close to Behrampur existed ever since 1600 A.D. The fort formed the center of administration of Mushidabad district in the year 1876. In the year 1857, Behrampur was under the reign of Raja Krishnath. The first Sepoy Mutiny took place in Behrampur in 1857. The town Kasim Bazar and Lalbag was part of Behrampur. These place bared testimony to the bloody events that took place in the history of West Bengal. The region had various settlements in and around the river Bhagirathi. Trade flourished along the banks of the river Bhagirathi. The place prospered in the year 1971 under the rule of the East India Company. Before the settlement of the British in Behrampur young generations were told by their fathers that the land besides the stream flowing from the Ganges was fertile and hence fit for cultivation. The British, hence for such knowledge passed from generations to generations, termed the region as ‘The Golden Bengal’.

Before the rule of the East India Company, Behrampur was ruled by the Nawabs. For generations the Jagat Seth family maintained their occupation as finance administrator’s since the time of the Nawab rule.

History of Bathinda

According to historians, the place Bathinda was known as Bikramgarh in ancient times. In some scriptures it is mentioned as Batrind. In the year 1211 A.D, Bathinda was known as Tabarhindh and mentioned in Jami-Ul-Hakayat. In the 6th century, this Bathinda was ruled by Bhati Rajput Kings and hence the place became known as Bhatinda.

In 965 A.D Bathinda was ruled by a Hindu Emperor Jayapala who was challenged by the invading army of the sultan twice. In the year 1189, Muhammad Ghori invaded Bathinda and captured the fort. In 1191, Prithvi Raj Chauhan attacked the fought a fierce battle with the army of Muhammad Ghori and regained the fort under his control.

After the death, of Ghori the Sultan of Delhi took Bathinda under his rule. After four generation of the Sultans rule, the place was ruled by Raziya who was the daughter of the last Sultan of Delhi. She was regarded to be the first Empress of India and was given the title as Razia Sultan.

In 1754, the Maharaja of Patiala conquered Bathinda and brought it under the rule of his kingdom, Patiala. After the Indian Independence, Bathinda formed the center of operation of Bathinda district.

History of Barrackpore

According to historians, Barrackpore was known as ‘Chanak’ during 1495. During the colonial periods the British Raj named the place as Barrackpore.

Barrackpore was once a trading center. Various commercial products and artifacts were traded with the Greeks between the 1st and 2nd century B.C. until the end of 3rd century A.D. along the banks of the Hooghly River. When Bengal was ruled by the Mughal Empire, an individual was appointed at various divisions known as the Mahal. One such Mahal name the place as ‘Barbuckpur’. The British East India Company first established their cantonment in the year 1772. Government establishment were seen created in and around Barrackpore during the reign of the British Raj.

During the 19th century the place became the most important military and center of operation of the British rule. Many historic events took place in Barrackpore during the 19th century. One such event was the Sepoy mutiny, which took place in the year 1824, led by a Sepoy named Binda Tiwary. In 1857, another incident took place in Barrackpore marking it as the Indian Rebellion of 1857 in Indian history. Mangal Pandey an Indian soldier in the British rank fired a shot at the then ruling British commander and was later court-martialled. The entire regiment was dissipated because of his act. This action by the British raj caused great enragement among other sepoys which later became the source of the rebellious act that took place in Barrackpore. A park was dedicated in his name now known as ‘Sahid Mangal Pandey Udyan’. It lies among the beautiful landscapes near the river Hoogly.
