The place was named Lansdowne in the year 1887 after the then Viceroy to India, Lord Lansdowne. The place developed under Lord Lansdowne’s administration. The place formed the most important training center for new recruits in the Garhwal Rifles regiment in those days and it still exists. Lansdowne was one of the famous hill stations among the British. In 13th century one of the prince of Kham located in the Eastern Tibet migrated to Sikkim and settled down in the Chumbi Valley in Sikkim. History of Kuttikkanam

The region was administered by Changanacherry rulers in the 16th century. During the year 1756 the Travancore ruler defeated the kings of Changanacherry.
