Deoria is a town situated in Deoria District in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located about 50 km from Gorakhpur city and about 317 km east of state capital Lucknow. Deoria Town is the administrative headquarter of Deoria district and the district occupies an area of 2,535 sq. km. The Postal Code of Deoria begins from 274001.

Deoria is situated between 26.5° N latitude and 83.79° E longitude and is placed about 68 meters above the mean level of the sea. Deoria District is surrounded by Kushinagar district in the north, Ballia district to the south, Siwan district, Bihar towards east and Gorakhpur district to the west.

Deoria is widely famous for its historical temples, degree colleges, technical institutes and libraries. Ghaghara, Rapti and Chhoti Gandak are the major rivers flowing through Deoria district. Also Deoria has near proximity with two famous towns Salempur Barhaj and Bhatpar Rani.

 

History and Culture of Deoria:-

There are two theories about the origin of the name Deoria, one theory states that, Deoria receives its name from the presence of Somnath Temple and Deorahi Temple. Another theory states that, Deoria received name from Devpuria or Devaranya. The general meaning of Deoria in local language is ‘the group of temples’.

Deoria was ruled by major dynasties of the country like Kosala Kingdom, Magadh Kingdom, Panchala Kingdom, Maurya Empire, Gupta and Bihar Kings.

Deoria was formed as a district in the year 1946 carving out from Gorakhpur District. Bhojpuri is the widely spoken language among the locals of Deoria.

History of Deogarh:-

Raja Shri Basudeb Sudhal Deb was one of the famous kings ruled Deogarh during the period of 1869–1903. He was more concentrated on the development of literature, education and art. Raja Basu Dev High School is one of the major schools of Deogarh and was established by Raja Shri Basudeb Sudhal Deb.

Raja Sachidananda Tribhuban Dev, a son of Sir Sudhal Dev ruled Deoghar in the beginning of 20th century and he was introduced hydro-electric system in Kodarkot water fall and was established cloth loom and sugar factory in 1908. Deogarh came into existence as a district on 1 January 1948 divided from Sambalpur District.
