Chingola is a Zambian city situated in the province of the Copperbelt, around 410 km north of the national capital, Lusaka. Chingola has established itself as the copper-mining capital of Zambia. Chingola is also noted as one of the gateways to an orphaned chimpanzee sanctuary, Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, which is situated around 60 km northwest of Chingola. Another renowned tourist destination near Chingola is Hippo Pool on the Kafue River, around 10 km from the Chingola city.

Located around 1,363 meters above sea level, Chingola is geographically positioned between 12°32′ S latitude and 27°51′ E longitude.

The history of Chingola revolves round its copper mining industry founded in 1943 with the discovery of copper mines in the area. Chingola is the site of the historical Chingola High School.

 

How to reach Chingola?

There is an airport near Chingola city, but the availability of flights is not guaranteed. The closest major international airport to Chingola is Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola, located around 120 km southeast of Chingola. This airport operates flights from Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Kasama, Lusaka, Mansa, Solwezi and Nairobi.

Kafue River:

The Kafue River flows around 10 km north of the city of Chingola, where visitors can see a hippo pool with a large number of hippopotamus swimming in the river.

 

Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage:

The Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is one of the preferred places of tourists to visit in Chingola and its surrounding towns. David and Sheila Siddle founded this orphanage in order to provide treatment for a badly wounded chimpanzee in 1983. Currently the orphanage houses around 100 orphaned chimpanzees. Hippopotamus and peacocks are the other highlights of the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage.
